 Library Expansion Project

Consideration for Lancaster Community Band Needs

It is the belief of the co-directors of the Lancaster Community Band (LCB) and fellow members that whatever performance considerations are included in the Library expansion they should be multi-purpose in concept and not designed for exclusive use by the LCB. Since the LCB is a totally volunteer organization, there is no guarantee that this group will exist from year to year. The present directors and members certainly plan on continuing into the near future and hopefully for many years to come. With this in mind, others could use a multi-purpose performance area in the event that some year(s) the LCB does not exist.

Considerations for a multi-purpose performance area:

Positioning area so that evening sun in June and July is not directly in the performers eyes. (possibly facing Northwest)?

A solid, flat, hard, performance surface with few if any steps. - approximately 50'x 50'. (if there are steps, a wide ramp should be built in for handicap accessibility and movement of large instruments)

  1. Easy accessibility for loading and unloading. (accessible by truck or large van)
  2. Four or five 20amp circuits spaced around the performance area.
  3. Secure storage behind stage or nearby - approximately 12' x 12' or larger, at least seven feet high with adequate lighting.
  4. Public address system with permanent outdoor speaker system and at least four microphone inputs.
  5. Appropriate lighting for music reading.

If there is to be a back wall, sides or a ceiling, these need to be made of a hard, reflective material such as brick, concrete or wood. (metal or canvas are not desirable). The ceiling (if there is one) should angle out to the audience and be at least 20' high at the proscenium.

Special note: If the performance area is to have walls and a ceiling it is highly recommended that an acoustical engineer by consulted to recommended shape, materials and dimensions.

Thank you for considering these recommendations.
